'Lanterns' Teaser Reaction: First Look at DC's Green Lantern on HBO Max
Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler bring Green Lantern from the galaxy to American soil in this gritty adaptation
“You manifested it early.”
Call it a leak. Call it an accidental early upload by an intern.
On Wednesday, March 4 (a day ahead of its scheduled release) HBO Max dropped the first teaser of the long-awaited series, Lanterns.
According to Warner Bros. press, the official logline states that Lanterns is a series that “follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
Starring Kyle Chandler (Hal Jordan), Aaron Pierre (John Stewart), and Kelly Macdonald (Kerry), the series brings the legendary DC heroes into a darker, grounded world that feels far closer to a crime drama than the cosmic adventure than audiences might have expected.

A Gritty Adaptation That Establishes the Mood
The opening scene of Lanterns crashes onto the screen—literally, a car goes over a cliff, throwing John Stewart right into the hard lessons of what it means to be a superhero.
Within just moments of the audience seeing Hal and John, the teaser instantly frames a story that is rooted in legacy, responsibility, and the weight of what it means to wear the ring.
“The Green Lanterns oath is to protect people.”
Recited by John, the teaser gives us a two-minute glimpse into the history, the missteps, and glory of what it means to be a Green Lantern.
A Mystery in the Heartland
In the middle of John’s training, working (impatiently) to be worthy enough to bear the ring of the Lanterns, they come upon a town that feels eerie and alarmingly wrong.
The teaser doesn’t shy away from that feeling. Instead, it dives head first into that unsettling atmosphere.
The backdrop of the guitar within the underbelly of discoveries creates a stir within the audience that keeps you on alert as you try to dissect every frame to figure out just what is to come of the series.
And it’s the combination of the score and the absence of obvious conflict that keeps you watching.
Rather than leaning into the predictable displays of explosions, well-choreographed fight sequences, and the antagonist that just can’t help but announce themselves, the Lanterns teaser takes an approach that stretches the cord of tension just up to the point of snapping.
Practical vs CGI: Where’s the ‘green’ in Green Lantern
In the teaser, we get a glimpse of Hal’s Green Lantern suit; a physical uniform that pivots away from the suit formed by cosmic energy from the ring itself, as it is in the comics.
The suit being practical aids the “true detective” gritty storyline and backdrop that grounds the series into something more tangible rather than wholly intergalactic.
This singular choice sets Lanterns apart from previous adaptations immediately. While the decision has divided fans of the comics and film/television adaptations, the absence of the vibrant green leaves room for the suit to take shape—and color—based on the wearer and bearer of the ring.
This makes the suits’ more neutral tones feel malleable and customizable to the person wielding its power—and that feels like what was exactly intended.
Restraint and Control
Something else that is noticeably absent in the teaser is the amount of powers the Lanterns display.
We see the ring.
We know the lore.
And Hal takes flight…but in plain clothes.
That restraint pulls you into the teaser in a way that makes you excited for what’s to come. Rather than overwhelm the audience with cosmic visuals and expected chaos, Lanterns strategically builds curiosity.
Although fans may be divided in reception, wrestling with their expectations versus the reality of the adaptation, one thing is for certain: everyone will be tuned in.
