‘The Savant’ indefinitely postponed amid U.S social climate
The 2025 drama-thriller, The Savant, stars Jessica Chastain as Jodi Goodwin, an undercover investigator, codenamed The Savant—she infiltrates online hate groups in order to prevent heinous violent acts from extremist groups. The series was based on a 2019 article by Andrea Stanley about a real-life woman who used her knowledge and skills to understand extremist ideologies in order to prevent future mass attacks. The series follows Jodi Goodwin as she attempts to balance her personal life with her calling to help prevent terrorism from extremist groups.
The first two episodes were set to premiere Friday, September 26 on Apple TV+. However, the political climate, in the wake of the Charlie Kirk assassination and the censorship across multiple networks, Apple TV+ decided to indefinitely delay the release of the eight episode series. A spokesperson at Apple TV+ spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and stated “After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone The Savant…We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date.”
There is Power in the Informed
Executive produced by Jessica Chastain, the series also stars Nnamdi Asomugha, Cole Doman, Jordana Spiro, Trinity Lee Shirley, Toussaint Francois Battiste and guest star Pablo Schreiber. This series poses the question: is it possible to stop a mass shooting before it happens? In a country that has averaged over 400 mass shootings between 2019-2022 (314 so far in 2025), The Savant set out to have a real conversation about gun violence in America. According to CNN, since the enactment of the Gun Violence Archive in 2013, there has been a significant rise in mass shootings, 2021 being the worst recorded since the GVA was formed.
Since its inception, entertainment television has served to tell stories, no matter the difficulty, in order to spark conversations within our communities. Many of these conversations inspired change—not only in our households but politically as well (Me Too movement and Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act in 2022). Film and television always navigated these spaces in a way for audiences across the globe to receive difficult subjects to internally process, digest, and take action. But in the wake of Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and now The Savant, we have to ask: what now?
