'The Testaments' Trailer Reaction: Hulu's Next Chapter of the Dystopian Gilead
The first trailer for The Testaments has arrived, offering a chilling look at the next generation of Gilead
Created by showrunner and executive producer Bruce Miller, The Testaments, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, is described as a dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead.
The 10-episode series stars Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia (The Handmaid’s Tale), Chase Infiniti as Agnes (Presumed Innocent), and Lucy Halliday as Daisy (Blue Jean).
From the moment the trailer begins, the stuttering serenity of the atmosphere grips you—the mood unmistakable.
This trailer starts off as something suspended in a state of time and false reality before it brightens for just a moment; a moment before the truths of human monstrosity nestles into the fabric of every dress, every cloak, and every room of the elite preparatory school for future wives.
Even in the earliest of its frames, the false sense of security, the world of Gilead closes around you like a panic attack.
“I guess it’s easier to accept a story than to believe the people around you are monsters.”

The Ideology That Sparked a Revolution
The trailer dances around one of the plot lines: Agnes is chosen to show Daisy around the compound, thus revealing part of the nature of their relationship to the audience.
However, Agnes quickly questions her motivations and the trailer gets dark, and fast.
It is alarmingly clear that Daisy’s entrance sets off an immediate chain reaction. And while the introduction of the two friends feels coincidental enough, the trailer shows us that their meeting is anything but, igniting something darker and much larger within the rigid and cold walls of Gilead.
“We gather here tonight to bring women back to their rightful place.”
Rightful place.
Those two words mark the shift within the trailer that takes shape into its own form of rebellion and revolution. And what starts off as something purely observational to viewers turns into a dark and immersive shift inside the world these young girls inhabit.
With the echo of Daisy saying “I have to save those girls,” the trailer sprints toward freedom, autonomy, and agency.
“It was time for us to change things.”
In just a few minutes, The Testaments makes it clear that this dystopian sequel to its critically acclaimed predecessor tears back the fabric of society, bringing us to the moments that changed these girls’ lives forever.
Final Thoughts, Additional Cast & Release Schedule
While the trailer remains careful not to reveal too much, the focus is clear, and the tension between obedience and resistance hangs over every moment shown.
As the trailer builds toward its final scenes, it suggests that this story may not just be about survival within Gilead—but about destroying it altogether.
The ensemble cast that helps bring this novel to life include:
Mabel Li
Amy Seimetz
Brad Alexander
Rowan Blanchard
Mattea Conforti
Zarrin Darnell-Martin
Eva Foote
Isolde Ardies
Shechinah Mmpumlwana

Kira Guloien
The Testaments will premiere the first three episodes on Wednesday, April 8, with new episodes airing weekly thereafter on Hulu. Check out the trailer below.
